Over 600 years of history is being unlocked on April 1 2023, and we were commissioned by the Historic Coventry Trust to create the campaign to promote this.
Coventry’s Charterhouse was founded as a Carthusian monastery in 1381, and after the Dissolution, the site was converted to a private house and passed through many hands over the following centuries. In 1940, it was gifted to the people of Coventry but has been locked up until now.
Wall paintings dating from the medieval and Elizabethan periods have been preserved and restored in the former monastery, along with other original features and artifacts. The site will also be home to a brand new café bar – Purnell’s at Charterhouse – and a michelin-starred restaurant opening later this year.
Our work comprised the ‘Charterhouse Unlocked’ social media and digital campaign that has been really well received and has generated a lot of interest pre-opening, along with a newspaper that has been distributed to over 7000 local residents.
Funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Historic England, the Ernest Cook Trust, the Edward Cadbury Charitable Trust, the Garfield Weston Partnership, Benefact Trust, the Idlewild Trust, Country Houses Foundation, Foyle Foundation, and Wolfson Foundation have enabled the extensive restoration project to take place.
